Every 7 seconds, a preventable maternal or newborn death occurs. That’s a reality the World Health Organization (WHO) is working to change. This World Health Day, WHO is launching “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures”—a year-long campaign calling on the global health community to take urgent action. Right now, too many women and babies are at risk, and progress toward reducing maternal and newborn deaths is off track. At Allegheny County Medical Society, we stand with WHO in advocating for high-quality care, compassionate providers, and a healthcare system that listens to women—before, during, and after birth.
