The Heinz Endowments

Overview

The Heinz Endowments is a nonprofit organization based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, dedicated to improving the quality of life in southwestern Pennsylvania. Established in 2007 through the merger of the Howard Heinz Endowment (founded in 1941) and the Vira I. Heinz Endowment (founded in 1986), the organization focuses on local and national challenges while maintaining a global perspective.

Leadership

As of April 2023, Chris DeCardy serves as the president of the Heinz Endowments. DeCardy previously worked as the CEO of the ClimateWorks Foundation and brings extensive experience in environmental and philanthropic sectors. Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, holds a significant role as chairman of the board, which contributes to the organization's national profile.

Grantmaking and Initiatives

The Heinz Endowments primarily concentrate their funding within southwestern Pennsylvania, although they collaborate with national and global partners to address broader issues. Key focus areas include environmental grantmaking, support for Black community organizations, and projects promoting social justice and economic sustainability. Notable initiatives include a $12 million program supporting the Black community in Pittsburgh and significant environmental grants to organizations advocating for cleaner air and environmental justice.

Relationship with Other Heinz Entities

The Heinz Endowments are independent of other Heinz-related entities, such as the H.J. Heinz Company and its philanthropic arm, the Kraft Heinz Company Foundation. While the organization is institutionally separate from the Heinz Family Foundation, both are rooted in the Heinz family's philanthropic legacy. The Heinz Family Foundation administers the Heinz Awards, which honor achievements in various fields.

The Endowments have collaborated with prominent environmental organizations, including the Climate Reality Project. They have also partnered with other philanthropic organizations, such as the Ford Foundation, to support marginalized communities through significant grants for Black cultural organizations.
