The Heinz Endowments

Established in 2007 through the merger of the Howard Heinz Endowment (founded in 1941) and the Vira I. Leadership

As of April 2023, Chris DeCardy serves as the president of the Heinz Endowments. DeCardy previously worked as the CEO of the ClimateWorks Foundation and brings extensive experience in environmental and philanthropic sectors. Teresa Heinz Kerry, the wife of former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, holds a significant role as chairman of the board, which contributes to the organization's national profile.

Grantmaking and Initiatives

The Heinz Endowments primarily concentrate their funding within southwestern Pennsylvania, although they collaborate with national and global partners to address broader issues. Key focus areas include environmental grantmaking, support for Black community organizations, and projects promoting social justice and economic sustainability. The Heinz Endowments are independent of other Heinz-related entities, such as the H.J. Heinz Company and its philanthropic arm, the Kraft Heinz Company Foundation. While the organization is institutionally separate from the Heinz Family Foundation, both are rooted in the Heinz family's philanthropic legacy. The Heinz Family Foundation administers the Heinz Awards, which honor achievements in various fields.
