Founded in 1961 by Aline and Gerald Wolf, the academy was initially known as Wolf Academy and operated in the Wolfs' home in Altoona. It became the first Montessori school licensed in Pennsylvania and the third in the United States. In 1962, it was renamed Penn Mont Academy, reflecting its connection to Pennsylvania and the Montessori method. Over the years, the school has grown and relocated several times, with its current main campus established in Hollidaysburg in 2001. A satellite campus was opened at Penn State Altoona in 2010.
