This upcoming weekend marks the 128th anniversary of the dedication of the Shaw 54th Memorial on Boston Common. In 2015, while working on the Memorial, stone conservators informed the Friends that the monument’s brick core was deteriorating from water penetration over time, making it vulnerable to seismic events. An engineering study was conducted, leading to a $2.8 project to reconstruct and stabilize the Memorial. The Friends of the Public Garden proudly worked alongside partners Museum of African American History, City of Boston, and National Parks Service to restore this historic piece of public art, culminating in a nationally-covered rededication ceremony in 2022 on the anniversary of the Memorial's original dedication.
