Description

American Rose Society

The American Rose Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1892. It is dedicated to promoting the culture, preservation, and appreciation of roses, and improving the standard of excellence in rose cultivation. Initially established in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the organization's headquarters is currently located on 118 acres in Shreveport, Louisiana, known as America's Rose Garden.

The American Rose Society was a founding member of the World Federation of Rose Societies, which provides additional benefits to its members. The organization offers various educational resources and member benefits, including a bi-monthly magazine called American Rose and access to the Handbook for Selecting Roses, which evaluates over 3,000 rose varieties.

Organization Structure

The American Rose Society operates with a structured leadership, including a board of directors and regional directors. The society also supports local rose societies across the United States through the Local Rose Society Advisory Committee (LRSAC). This committee helps provide resources, leadership support, and ideas for local fundraising to aid in maintaining vibrant and effective local rose societies.

History and Impact

Early in its history, the American Rose Society worked closely with figures like J. Horace McFarland, who served as an unpaid editor of the American Rose Annual. This publication significantly increased amateur membership and bridged the gap between amateur and commercial growers. McFarland's contributions are celebrated with two rose varieties named in his honor.

Member Benefits
