Overview
People of Origin Rightfully Loved and Wanted (P.O.O.R.L.A.W.), abbreviated as PL, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded by Saundra Cole and Terrell Johnson, P.O.O.R.L.A.W. aims to address systemic inequalities affecting Black and Brown communities through advocacy, education, and community development initiatives.
History
P.O.O.R.L.A.W. was established in response to the wrongful conviction of Terrell Johnson, who, at 19 years old, was sentenced to life in prison without parole based on false testimony. The grassroots organization emerged from the efforts of Saundra Cole, who dedicated 18 years to organizing community resources and mobilizing support for Johnson's case. The successful campaign for his exoneration in 2015 ignited a broader mission to combat racial injustice in the Greater Hazelwood area, leading to the organization's formation as a beacon for social justice and community empowerment.
Mission and Vision
P.O.O.R.L.A.W. is committed to ending systemic racism and addressing the structural inequalities faced by the African American community, particularly in areas such as criminal justice, housing, and employment. The organization envisions a future where residents of Hazelwood and similar communities have equitable access to resources, quality education, and sustainable employment opportunities.
