When Dr. Cecilia Vogel joined Augustana College’s physics faculty in 1992, she became the department’s first female professor and one of just a few female physicists in the country. She never made a big deal of it, but what she symbolized made a big difference. Over the next 33 years, Dr. Vogel inspired generations of students through innovative teaching, steady leadership and a deep belief that anyone could thrive in the physical sciences. Many alumni say they saw what was possible for themselves because they saw it in her first. She helped build one of the top student physics clubs in the country and made even quantum physics feel approachable and fun.
