We want to extend a HUGE Thank You to all the poets and writers who participated in our second annual Poem-a-thon fundraiser, AND the donors/sponsors who supported their work. We had so much fun getting our creative juices flowing! Overall, you raised $6,558 for our refugee friends in Columbia and are supporting the services we provide every single day. What happens when you create a sense of belonging and community in a small town? A Congolese refugee taking English class at City of Refuge realized he had a flat tire and did not know what to do. He had never had a flat before! J.J. and Barry (Care Coordinators) went to the parking lot to figure out the problem and fix it while our refugee friend was in class, working hard toward learning English skills. Along came two Afghan refugee friends who jumped right in and changed the tire in no time. This really made our day and helped our Congolese friend out of a bind! This is what community, belonging, and support look like. People from all over the world coming together and helping one another out of sticky circumstances! (fb)
