First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA, now known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in 1892 in Cleveland, Ohio. The organization was established by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant women with the support of Father Stephen Furdek. Their mission was to provide death and injury benefits to protect families of industrial workers, who often faced financial insecurity due to workplace hazards[2][3].
Founding and Early Years
The society began with nine members and assets of $77 in 1892. By the end of that year, membership had grown to 95, with assets totaling $212. The organization quickly expanded, establishing itself as a legal entity in Ohio in 1899. This allowed the society to function under Ohio’s fraternal code, which significantly helped in its growth and recognition[2].
Growth and Achievements
Over the years, FCSLA expanded rapidly. By 1942, it had $12 million in assets and 65,000 members. The society merged with the Cleveland Slovak Union in 1945. In the 1950s and later decades, FCSLA continued to grow, introducing new financial products and community initiatives such as scholarship programs and cultural events[2][4].
Current Status
Today, FCSLA Life is a premier fraternal benefit society with over 107,000 members across the United States. The organization has maintained an A- rating by A.M. Best for its financial strength. Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski from 2012 until her recent retirement, FCSLA achieved significant financial growth, surpassing $1 billion in insurance in force and assets. The organization remains committed to its values of family, faith, and financial security, while engaging in charitable activities and promoting Slovak-American culture[3][5].
Charitable Initiatives
FCSLA Life has been actively involved in various charitable activities, including the establishment of an Anna Hurban Scholarship program, relief initiatives, and matching fund projects to support local communities and organizations. The organization has also launched a Young Adult Leadership Council to foster engagement among younger members[5].
