Camp Hope Foundation

Overview

The Camp Hope Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support and community experiences for individuals affected by cancer, blood diseases, and other catastrophic illnesses. The foundation focuses on creating a safe and engaging environment for those in need, fostering emotional healing and personal growth through various activities and programs.

History

Camp Hope originated from a vision to offer unique and supportive experiences for children undergoing pediatric cancer treatment. This vision was supported by Julie Moore of the Dax Foundation in August 2017, leading to the establishment of a formal advisory committee. Collaborations with healthcare institutions, such as OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center and the University of Illinois College of Medicine, helped realize this goal. The camp began offering in-person programs for cancer and blood disorder patients in 2018 and continued throughout the pandemic by offering virtual experiences until in-person activities could resume.

In September 2022, following a change in leadership, the organization officially became the Camp Hope Foundation as a nonprofit entity. This transition aimed to secure vital funding necessary for expanding its programs beyond the annual camp, offering year-round support services for patients and their families.

Programs and Activities

The Camp Hope Foundation provides medically safe camping experiences, designed to be accessible and enjoyable for participants despite their health challenges. In addition to the annual summer camp, the foundation is developing programs such as young adult survivorship retreats and support services for the children of cancer patients. These initiatives aim to build a year-round community of support, enhancing emotional well-being and fostering connections among those affected by these illnesses.

Governance and Funding

The foundation operates under a diverse board of directors, including healthcare professionals, community leaders, and advocates for its mission. Financial support comes primarily from donations and fundraising activities, which are essential for maintaining the quality and reach of its programs.

Mission and Impact

Camp Hope Foundation's mission resonates with the belief that hope and supportive communities can heal emotional wounds. By providing free, accessible programs, it bridges gaps in support services for those navigating serious illnesses, offering opportunities for building friendships, confidence, and a sense of community among participants. The foundation's work continues to evolve, expanding its reach to serve more individuals and families affected by health crises throughout the year.
