Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio

The Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio, part of the Grand Lodge of Ohio, is a nonprofit organization that follows the Anglo-American tradition of Freemasonry in the United States. The Grand Lodge of Ohio, formally known as the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Ohio, is the governing body overseeing the largest group of Masonic lodges in Ohio.

History

Freemasonry in Ohio predates the state itself. The first lodge meeting was held in Marietta in 1790. By 1808, there were six lodges operating under charters from Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Kentucky. These lodges united in 1808 to form the Grand Lodge of Ohio by a convention held at Chillicothe. General Rufus Putnam, known as the "Father of the Northwest Territory," was elected Ohio’s first Grand Master.

Structure and Membership

The Grand Lodge of Ohio is one of the largest Masonic memberships in the country, with over 70,000 Masons and more than 430 chartered lodges as of recent reports. The organization emphasizes brotherly love, relief, and truth, and its lodges play a significant role in community development and charitable activities across Ohio.

Recognition of Prince Hall Masonry

In 1994, the Grand Lodge of Ohio granted fraternal recognition to the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Ohio, acknowledging both as regular and legitimate proponents of Freemasonry. This recognition allows for fraternal visitation rights within the state, promoting harmony and cooperation between the two grand lodges.
