"My name is Charlotte, and I was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer in the summer of 2023 at age 32. One evening, after putting my 10-month-old daughter to bed, I went to pump. My right side wasn’t suctioning properly and started to hurt. I noticed a lump but assumed it might be a clogged duct. I took a shower to try to relieve it, but then noticed tenderness in my armpit. As I felt around, I discovered another large lump. At that point, I got pretty nervous. I carry the BRCA1 gene and had been doing yearly screenings since 2017. That same week, I already had an appointment with my OB/GYN. She also thought it could be a clogged duct—those can affect the armpit too—and just six months earlier, my scans were clear. Still, because of my family history and the BRCA gene, we decided to do a diagnostic ultrasound to be safe. A few days later, during the ultrasound, I remember chatting with the radiologist—then suddenly, it went quiet. That’s when I knew something wasn’t right. She said, ‘I do not like what I am seeing, and we need to get you in for a biopsy.’ From that moment on, my life changed forever. I went through 16 rounds of chemo, 13 rounds of immunotherapy, and a double mastectomy. Accepting that this was my new reality was incredibly hard, but I put my head down and fought through every day.
