HBCU Community Development Action Coalition

The HBCU Community Development Action Coalition is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting economic development around Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs). Founded in June 2010, the coalition works to create opportunities for students, small businesses, and the broader community surrounding these institutions.

Purpose

The primary goal of the HBCU CDAC is to foster long-term economic growth by connecting stakeholders such as HBCUs, MSIs, community development corporations (CDCs), and the community economic development industry. It achieves this through various initiatives, including financial education, green energy projects, and securing funding for opportunity zones to support small businesses and underdeveloped areas.

Initiatives
  1. Clean Energy Initiative: HBCU CDAC is actively involved in a Clean Energy Initiative aimed at increasing solar accessibility and workforce training in high-opportunity communities surrounding HBCUs. It has facilitated the installation of solar systems in numerous homes, providing significant energy savings for homeowners while promoting environmental stewardship.

  2. Financial Education: The coalition offers programs designed to enhance financial literacy among HBCU/MSI students and community members, which helps empower them economically.

  3. Community Development Programs: It supports initiatives that focus on affordable housing, small business development, and workforce training to revitalize economically challenged areas near HBCUs and MSIs.

Leadership and Structure

The organization is led by a board of directors and a CEO, with a broader leadership team comprising experienced professionals in community development, real estate, and education. Key leaders include Ron Butler, who has served as CEO since the organization's inception, and Larry K. Salley, the chairman of the board.

Financial Overview

As a tax-exempt entity, the HBCU CDAC relies primarily on contributions to fund its operations. It reported significant revenues in recent years, supporting its various programs and initiatives.

Partnerships

HBCU CDAC collaborates with HBCUs and other entities to enhance its impact. For instance, it has partnered with North Carolina A&T University for research and workforce training in clean energy, aiming to create a new energy economy benefiting local businesses and workers. Additionally, it serves as an Advisory Board member for the Green Bank for Rural America, furthering its commitment to clean energy solutions in underserved communities.

Impact

By facilitating community development and clean energy initiatives, the HBCU CDAC plays a critical role in enhancing economic opportunities for marginalized communities while promoting environmental sustainability. Its efforts have already shown tangible benefits, such as reduced energy costs for homeowners and the creation of renewable energy job opportunities for students and community members.
