Free & Accepted Masons of Washington

The Free & Accepted Masons of Washington, also known as the Grand Lodge of Free & Accepted Masons of Washington, is a nonprofit fraternal organization operating in the state of Washington.

History

Freemasonry was introduced to the Washington Territory through the Grand Lodge of Oregon. Until 1853, Washington was part of the Oregon Territory. The first lodges chartered in this area included Olympia Lodge (1853), Steilacoom Lodge (1854), Grand Mound Lodge (1857), and Washington Lodge (1858). These lodges eventually convened to form the Grand Lodge of Washington State on December 8, 1858, more than three decades before Washington achieved statehood in 1889[1][4].

In historical context, the Grand Lodge of Washington played a significant role in the early governance of Washington. The first duly elected Governor of Washington, Elisha P. Ferry, was a Mason, and the first session of the Washington Legislature took place in a Masonic Hall in Olympia[4].

Philanthropic Activities

The Grand Lodge of Washington is actively involved in numerous charitable endeavors, often in collaboration with Washington Masonic Charities. These initiatives include educational scholarships, improving reading programs, disaster relief efforts, and research funding projects. Locally, many Masonic lodges support community events, sports programs, scholastic activities, and civic initiatives[1].

Prince Hall Masonry in Washington

Prince Hall Masons have been present in Washington since at least 1870. Despite initial attempts to integrate with the mainstream Grand Lodge, recognition was formally extended only much later. In 1989, a resolution was passed recognizing Prince Hall Masons in Washington, but it faced significant opposition from other Grand Lodges across the United States and Canada. This resolution was rescinded but later reinstated in 1990, acknowledging the legitimacy of Prince Hall Masonry in Washington[3].

Organization and Membership

Today, the Grand Lodge of Washington oversees more than 169 lodges across the state, with a membership exceeding 12,000 brothers. It continues to emphasize the principles of Freemasonry, attracting men of diverse backgrounds and moral character[1].

Notable Members

Throughout its history, the Grand Lodge of Washington has counted several prominent figures among its members. Notable national figures include Senator Henry M. Jackson, while state-level leaders like Elisha P. Ferry, the first Governor of Washington, have also been part of the fraternity[1].

George Washington and Freemasonry

While the organization is named for George Washington, who was a prominent Mason himself, there is no direct organizational connection. George Washington joined the Freemasons in 1752 at the Lodge at Fredericksburg, Virginia, and remained a lifelong member. His involvement with Masonry reflects the broader historical influence of Freemasonry on American society and ideals during the colonial and revolutionary periods[5].

The Grand Lodge of Washington continues to uphold the values of brotherhood, morality, and community service that are core to Freemasonry worldwide.
