Founded originally in 1921, the Lucy Stone League was named after the 19th century feminist, Lucy Stone, who kept her birth name at her marriage to Henry Blackwell. The League pioneered many efforts on behalf of women in the 20th Century through the 1970's, but was superseded by the National Organization for Women on most issues. In 1997, the League was renewed and re-connected with its original issue of the right to retain or change one's surname, especially as that right relates to women at marriage.
