First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA), now known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded on January 1, 1892, in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant homemakers under the guidance of Father Stephen Furdek. The organization aimed to provide financial security, specifically death and injury benefits, to families of industrial laborers.

History

FCSLA was created during a time when women were often marginalized, and it marked a significant step forward in providing support to Slovak-American families. By the end of 1892, the society had grown from 9 members with $77 in assets to 95 members with $212 in assets. The organization expanded rapidly, with over 1,859 members by 1899.

In the following years, FCSLA continued to flourish. On October 29, 1899, the Ohio Secretary of State recorded the FCSLU charter, allowing the society to operate under Ohio's fraternal code. The society's assets increased by an average of 86 percent biennially from 1893 to 1915.

Throughout its history, FCSLA has celebrated significant milestones, including a major event in 1927 to mark its 35th anniversary, which featured a large parade and attracted about 8,000 attendees. In the 1930s, FCSLU granted waivers to families affected by the Great Depression. In 1942, FCSLU celebrated 50 years of service with $12 million in assets and 65,000 members. By 1945, it had merged with the Cleveland Slovak Union.

Evolution and Achievements

In the latter half of the 20th century, FCSLA underwent significant changes. It expanded its programs, including the introduction of a scholarship program in the 1950s and the publication of a Slovak-American cookbook. The society's name was changed to First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association in the late 1960s to avoid confusion with labor unions and other fraternals using the term "union."

In 2017, FCSLA celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking the occasion with a Mass and gala banquet. At that time, FCSLA reported over $900 million in assets and 115,000 members across the United States.

Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President from 2012 until her retirement in 2025, FCSLA experienced substantial growth. During her tenure, the organization's insurance in force and assets exceeded $1 billion, and it maintained an A.M. Best rating of A- (Excellent). Maleski expanded FCSLA's reach by opening new branches and implementing strategic initiatives for long-term sustainability.

FCSLA Life continues to uphold its mission of providing financial security while supporting Catholic values and Slavic traditions. The organization is known for its philanthropic activities, including scholarship programs and community support initiatives.
