FCSLA Life is a premier fraternal benefit society founded by nine Slovak immigrant women in 1892 ❤️ So much more than life insurance — become a member today!

First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA Life)

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA Life), previously known as the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Union, is a fraternal benefit society founded in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 1, 1892. The organization was established by nine Slovak immigrant women, led by Anna Hurban, with the encouragement of Father Stephen Furdek. The initial focus of FCSLA was to provide financial security for its members, primarily through death and injury benefits, addressing the economic hardships faced by families in industrial labor[2][3].

History

FCSLA began with just nine members and grew rapidly. By the end of 1892, it had attracted 95 members and by 1899, it had expanded to 1,859 members across 83 branches. The society officially registered with the Ohio Secretary of State on October 29, 1899. Throughout its history, FCSLA has marked significant milestones, including the construction of its first home office in 1930 and celebrating its 35th anniversary with a notable parade in Cleveland in 1927[2].

By the 1940s, FCSLA had grown substantially, celebrating its 50th anniversary with $12 million in assets and 65,000 members. In 1945, it merged with the Cleveland Slovak Union. Over the decades, the organization has continued to evolve and expand its offerings, introducing new insurance plans and community programs. The name was changed to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association in the late 1960s to avoid confusion with labor unions[2].

In recent years, FCSLA has undergone branding changes, now operating as FCSLA Life. Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President and CEO from 2012 until her retirement in February 2025, the organization experienced significant growth in financial strength and reach. FCSLA Life has maintained an A.M. Best rating of A- (Excellent) and has been recognized among top U.S. life insurance companies[5].

Mission and Activities

The mission of FCSLA Life is to provide financial security to its members while upholding Catholic values and Slovak traditions. The organization operates over 500 branches across the United States. It engages in various community and charitable activities, including scholarships, cultural events, and support for local organizations. Notably, FCSLA Life has awarded over 3,000 national scholarships and conducted numerous matching funds projects benefiting churches, schools, and nonprofit organizations[5].

FCSLA Life celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017 with a grand event in Cleveland, marking its growth to over $900 million in assets and 115,000 members[4]. The organization focuses on family, faith, and financial security, reflecting its commitment to both its Slovak heritage and American community engagement.
