Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, also known as the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Pittsburgh, is a nonprofit organization established in 1912. It serves as a central fundraising entity within the local Jewish community, supporting various philanthropic endeavors and social services.

Mission and Objectives

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh aims to cultivate resources, connect people, and collaborate across the community to live and fulfill Jewish values. Its mission is designed to enhance the well-being of the Jewish community by providing support for local and international causes.

History

The idea of creating a local Jewish Federation was first proposed by the National Council of Jewish Women-Pittsburgh Section as early as 1908. However, it did not gain consensus until after the death of Abraham Lippman, a prominent opponent, in 1910. The Federation was formally established in 1912 with Aaron Cohen as its first president.

Early Beneficiaries

Initially, the Federation supported several key organizations, including the Montefiore Hospital Association, Irene Kaufmann Settlement House, and the Hebrew Free Loan Association. Over time, it expanded its support to address broader community needs.

Development and Expansion

In the 1920s, the Federation oversaw significant growth across multiple neighborhoods as the Jewish population expanded into suburban areas. It also focused on professionalizing its operations and those of its member organizations. With the onset of the Great Depression in the 1930s, the Federation joined forces with the Community Chest of Allegheny County to better meet the increased demand for social services.

In 1936, the United Jewish Fund of Pittsburgh was created to raise funds for overseas beneficiaries, particularly in response to the rising need for international refugee aid. This effort intensified again following World War II and the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948.

During the late 1950s and 1960s, the Federation, now known as the United Jewish Federation, managed common challenges such as expansion and relocation among its affiliated agencies. It also became a major force in raising funds for Israel, especially after significant conflicts like the Six Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War in 1973.

Community Impact

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh plays a significant role in supporting local educational and cultural organizations. It has also been instrumental in assisting Jewish refuseniks from the Soviet Union, helping hundreds of them resettle in Western Pennsylvania during the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s.

Today, the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh continues to be a vital part of the local Jewish community, working closely with organizations like the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh and Jewish Family and Community Services to provide comprehensive support to residents across various life stages and challenges.

Affiliations

The Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh is part of a network represented by The Jewish Federations of North America, which encompasses 146 independent Federations and supports Jewish communities across the continent.
