🚨 EMERGENCY ALERT 🚨 A deadly earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand, leaving behind heartbreaking destruction and overwhelming need. Our team reports that the devastation is even worse than the initial reports you see in the news. Right now, financial gifts are the number one need to ensure help reaches our neighbors as quickly as possible. Thank you for sharing God’s love with those in greatest need. We may not be able to control when or where the next natural disaster may strike. But at Lutheran World Relief, we believe in being prepared and rushing to help our neighbors in their time of need. Especially because it’s generally the most vulnerable in society who suffer most. Here are five places affected by a surge in natural disasters — and how your support helps vulnerable families to weather the storms. 🌪️ THE AMERICAS: With emergency support from our donors, the Southeastern US is still recovering from hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. Many of our neighbors are also still feeling the effects of Eta and Iota in 2020. In addition to providing immediate relief after the storms, LWR is helping coffee and cacao farmers to restore their farms and make their crops more resilient. ⛈️ NEPAL: Glaciers in the Himalayas are melting twice as fast as they were 25 years ago, and monsoon rains are growing more intense. All this extra water floods the farmlands of the poorest families who live along the rivers. LWR works with these communities to increase flood safety, introduce flood-resilient crops and diversify incomes. 💥 NIGERIA: Erratic weather disrupts the growing cycle — and vulnerable families’ incomes. Cacao farmer Kate Odi says, “There are supposed to be plenty of cacao pods here. But because of ... dry weather, we are unable to have pods even in June. This is supposed to be the rainy season.” As in Nepal, LWR is helping farmers learn resilient farming techniques. 🔥 CALIFORNIA: Rapid swings between rainy weather and droughts have made wildfires more common and destructive. In Los Angeles, the powerful Santa Ana winds reached hurricane strength in early January 2025 — spreading the fires more quickly than they could be put out. With your help, LWR is providing emergency support to affected families. 🌊 SOUTH SUDAN: When people can't farm due to flooding, they are forced to move. Many end up in displacement camps. To help these families, LWR operates mobile medical clinics and offers nutrition support, seeds and farming tools, and even a motorboat to transport sick patients to the nearest hospital — normally an hours-long journey by canoe. Thank you for loving your neighbors whose lives and well-being are affected by natural disasters! Learn more on our blog: https://bit.ly/4hLZTD4 (fb)
