The Grand Lodge of New Hampshire, the governing body for Freemasonry in the state, was founded on July 8, 1789, at a meeting in the William Pitt Tavern in Portsmouth. This meeting was attended by five Freemasons who aimed to establish a Grand Lodge for New Hampshire. The attendees included Brothers Hall Jackson, Joseph Bass, Nathaniel Folsom, and Nathaniel Adams from St. John's Lodge, and Brother Alpheus Moore from Rising Sun Lodge in Keene, NH. At this meeting, they elected John Sullivan as the first Grand Master and held their first formal communication on July 16, 1789[1].

At the time of its formation, there were only three lodges in New Hampshire: St. John's (est. 1736), St. Patrick's in Portsmouth, and Rising Sun Lodge No. 4 in Keene[2].
