Free & Accepted Masons of New Hampshire
The Free & Accepted Masons of New Hampshire, registered as a nonprofit organization with the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 23-3341418, is a state-level Masonic organization part of the larger global network of Freemasonry.
History
The Grand Lodge of New Hampshire, the governing body for Freemasonry in the state, was founded on July 8, 1789, at a meeting in the William Pitt Tavern in Portsmouth. This meeting was attended by five Freemasons who aimed to establish a Grand Lodge for New Hampshire. The attendees included Brothers Hall Jackson, Joseph Bass, Nathaniel Folsom, and Nathaniel Adams from St. John's Lodge, and Brother Alpheus Moore from Rising Sun Lodge in Keene, NH. At this meeting, they elected John Sullivan as the first Grand Master and held their first formal communication on July 16, 1789[1].
Background and Organization
At the time of its formation, there were only three lodges in New Hampshire: St. John's (est. 1736), St. Patrick's in Portsmouth, and Rising Sun Lodge No. 4 in Keene[2]. The Grand Lodge of New Hampshire played a crucial role in coordinating and expanding Masonic activities within the state. It worked to establish new lodges and encourage existing ones to recognize its jurisdictional authority, laying the foundation for a strong Masonic presence in New Hampshire[1].
Masonic Lodges and Activities
St. John's Lodge No. 1 in Portsmouth, one of the oldest Masonic lodges in the United States, has been instrumental in New Hampshire Masonic history. Its members have played significant roles in American history, including participation in the American Revolution and contributions to the development of the U.S. government[3].
Over time, Freemasonry in New Hampshire has grown, with numerous lodges being established throughout the state. As of recent reports, there are 58 regular lodges and 4 special lodges, with a total of over 5,000 registered Freemasons[1]. These lodges engage in various community activities and charitable works, aligning with the broader Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.
Influence and Legacy
Freemasonry in New Hampshire has influenced not only local community development but also historical events. For instance, during the Civil War, soldiers from the 5th New Hampshire Infantry formed a Masonic lodge known as the Hughes Army Lodge, which was active throughout the conflict. This highlights the enduring presence of Masonry even in challenging circumstances[4].
Today, the Free & Accepted Masons of New Hampshire continue to promote moral and social welfare through their charitable initiatives and community involvement. They preserve a rich Masonic tradition while engaging with contemporary societal needs, ensuring their ongoing relevance and contribution to the state's cultural landscape.
