Another lost structure. According to the 1976 City of Winchester Architectural Inventory, the John Wall House (11-17 South Kent Street) was built in the early 1800s, possibly as early as 1806. The right three bays constituted the original portion of the house, which had Flemish bond brickwork and two end chimneys. Deed research shows that John Wall purchased the lot from Peter Sperry's estate in 1806 and held the property until it was sold by his heirs in 1880. Wall was said to be a bitter opponent of slavery. So many of Winchester's old homes have siding covering original log and frame construction, which can be misleading when it comes to a cursory determination of the structure's age.
