The Downtown Millburn Development Alliance Inc (DMDA) is a nonprofit organization established in 1992 with the mission to promote and enhance the economic vitality and improve the visual appeal of downtown Millburn, New Jersey. Founded by the Millburn Township Committee, the organization serves as the economic engine for the area, supporting local businesses and coordinating community events to attract both residents and visitors.

History and Mission

Since its inception, DMDA has focused on enhancing downtown Millburn’s appearance and vibrancy. The organization was created to support over 180 businesses in the downtown district and to foster a dynamic and thriving commercial environment. DMDA’s first event was the Snowflake Parade in December 1992, setting a tradition of community-centered activities that continue to this day.

Activities and Impact

DMDA organizes numerous annual events that draw thousands of attendees. These include the Snowflake Parade, Millburn Live—a series of weekend live music and family-friendly activities in June—Sidewalk Sales, the Farmer's Market, Pre-School Trick or Treat, Girls Night Out, and Shop Small Saturday. These events aim to increase foot traffic and encourage shopping, dining, and entertainment within the downtown area.

Downtown Millburn hosts approximately 500 retail, office, and commercial businesses, including well-known national brands such as Playa Bowls, Kung Fu Tea, and Bluemercury. The district boasts over 30 restaurants and more than 200 retailers, serving a population of over 20,000 people in Millburn Township.

The DMDA operates as a registered nonprofit organization with EIN 223185210. Its financial scope includes revenues in the range of approximately $200,000 annually, with expenses closely aligned to revenues, reflecting its role in community-focused economic development and event planning. Recognition

In 2017, DMDA celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter century of service to the Millburn community. The alliance remains a pivotal force in fostering a vibrant downtown environment, continually seeking innovative ways to support local businesses and enliven the community through cultural and commercial activities.
