Overview

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association (FCSLA) is a fraternal benefit society founded in 1892 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established by nine Slovak immigrant homemakers, led by Anna Hurban, with the encouragement of Father Stephen Furdek. The organization's primary mission is to provide financial security to its members while embracing Catholic values and Slovak heritage.

History

FCSLA was initiated in response to the need for death and injury benefits that could protect families from the risks associated with industrial labor during the late 19th century. By the end of 1892, the organization had grown from $77 in assets and 9 members to $212 in assets and 95 members. Over time, it expanded its services, establishing various programs such as insurance, community support, and cultural activities.

In the early 20th century, FCSLA continued to grow, celebrating its 35th anniversary in 1927 with a large celebration in Cleveland. In the 1960s, the organization changed its name to the First Catholic Ladies Slovak Association to avoid confusion with labor unions. By the late 1960s, it merged with several other Slovak organizations.

Activities and Programs

FCSLA offers life insurance and annuities, providing financial support to members across the United States. It has maintained an A- (Excellent) rating from A.M. Best. The organization supports educational initiatives through the Anna Hurban Scholarship Fund and engages in community philanthropy. Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, FCSLA experienced significant growth, expanding its branches and increasing its financial strength to over $1 billion.

Cultural and Community Engagement

FCSLA celebrates its Slovak heritage and Catholic traditions through various cultural events and activities. It has also been active in advocating for social causes and supporting Slovak-American cultural organizations.

Milestones
