Children's Optimal Health
Children's Optimal Health (COH) was a Texas Unincorporated Non-Profit Association dedicated to improving children's well-being by facilitating community-wide understanding and action on issues affecting their health. Established in early 2008, COH served as a collective leadership initiative uniting various organizations across healthcare, education, housing, and social services in Central Texas.
Mission and Activities
COH aimed to provide tools and insights that help communities visualize health challenges through data visualization and geographic information systems (GIS). By layering data from multiple sources, COH assisted communities in identifying health disparities, assets, and opportunities for collaborative change. Its work informed policy, encouraged research, and mobilized community action to improve outcomes for children.
Partnerships and Impact
COH was part of the Urban Institute's National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership, a learning community focused on neighborhood disparities. They collaborated with municipal entities, healthcare organizations, non-profits, and corporations to create neighborhood-level maps that highlighted health issues and guided intervention efforts.
Merger with United Way for Greater Austin
As of July 1, 2022, Children's Optimal Health merged with United Way for Greater Austin. This merger streamlined operational infrastructure to enhance service delivery in the community, focusing on research and evaluation to maximize impact as a data-driven organization. The merger supported the development of Model Community, a collaborative effort to build a more effective and person-centered system of health, education, and social services aimed at achieving equitable health and wellness outcomes for all community members.

When Taylor’s car broke down on the side of the road, panic set in. She was a single mother with three children in a rural, low-resource area. It brought her back to her lowest point — when stress and the grief of her mother’s passing led to her hospitalization. This time, she had someone to call. Melissa is a Community Health Worker with United Way’s Pathways Community HUB, a free program that provides resources for pregnant and postpartum mothers to thrive. Melissa showed up within 30 minutes. Taylor’s car was impounded. Melissa helped her buy a new one. She connected her to a resource for new, donated car seats. Taylor’s newborn was showing signs of delayed developmental milestones. Without hesitation, Melissa connected Taylor to child development resources. Now pregnant with her fourth child, Taylor is receiving routine prenatal care for the first time thanks to the gentle encouragement of her Community Health Worker. 💙 With the support of the United Way-led Pathways Community HUB, Taylor is building a healthier future for her family. Last year alone, Pathways Community HUB served more than 100 local mothers like Taylor. Read the full story: https://unitedwayaustin.org/when-hope-felt-out-of-reach-united-way-stepped-in/ (fb)
