This AAPI Heritage Month, ALBA reflects on the contributions of Asian Americans to global struggles for justice. One such story is that of Chi Chang, a Chinese American who volunteered with the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. Born in Hunan, China, and educated in the United States, Chi Chang was among the few Chinese Americans who joined the fight against fascism in Spain–despite facing racial discrimination and economic hardship. He chose to stand in solidarity with the oppressed, embodying the spirit of the Brigades. Chi Chang’s story is a testament to the resilience and commitment AAPI individuals exemplify in the face of adversity. It reminds us that history is not just about the past; it educates and inspires the present. This AAPI Heritage Month, ALBA remembers and celebrates the contributions of individuals like Chi Chang, who have shaped our shared history.
