ElephantVoices
ElephantVoices is a U.S. non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation, advocacy, research, and education of elephants. The organization is exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service.
Mission and Objectives
ElephantVoices aims to inspire wonder in the intelligence, complexity, and voices of elephants and to secure a kinder future for them. Through its CARE approach—Conservation, Advocacy, Research, and Education—the organization promotes the protection and kinder treatment of elephants both in the wild and in captivity.
Founders and Leadership
The organization was co-founded by Dr. Joyce Poole and Petter Granli. Dr. Joyce Poole is a renowned expert on elephant behavior with a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. She has studied the social behavior and communication of elephants for over 40 years, contributing significantly to conservation and welfare efforts. Petter Granli is an economist with a background in corporate management and marketing, serving as the President and CEO of ElephantVoices.
Activities and Projects
ElephantVoices engages in various projects to protect elephants. It launched a citizen science elephant conservation project in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, Kenya, in 2011. The organization also conducted extensive work in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique, between 2011 and 2019. These projects involve monitoring elephant movements, researching their behavior, and advocating for their welfare. ElephantVoices has collaborated on educational initiatives, including documentaries and online resources such as "The Elephant Ethogram," which provides a comprehensive library of African elephant behavior.
Collaborations and Partnerships
ElephantVoices collaborates with institutions and individuals worldwide, emphasizing the importance of networking and collaboration in achieving its goals. The organization is a partner in initiatives like the Global Sanctuary for Elephants and Santuário de Elefantes Brasil, aiming to provide sanctuary for suffering elephants.
Recognition and Transparency
ElephantVoices participates in GuideStar with a Platinum Level, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and accountability. The organization relies heavily on donations to support its activities, with a focus on efficient use of resources.

The NDs have been at a mud wallow with Pascal in musth. Nine year old Nastya in estrus has been off separately being followed around by males. As she arrives at the mud wallow a female closely allied to her Head-Shakes and moves toward her. They both Head-Raise, Ear-Lift and give Greeting-Rumbles to one another. The older female reaches Trunk-to-Genitals to Nastya. The behavior illustrated in this video is Greeting-Rumble: An explosive burst of long (~5-7 seconds) powerful, throaty, highly modulated and overlapping rumbles when members of a social group come together after a period of more prolonged separation. We refer to these calls as Greeting-Rumbles. Typically, participants approach one another face to face and then, when they meet one another, may turn or Pirouette to stand in parallel while Head-Raising, Ear-Lifting, and streaming with Temporin. Audible Rapid-Ear-Flapping may be heard as the calling continues and the participants may Urinate and Defecate, and may engage in Tusk-Clicking, Open-Mouth-to-Open-Mouth, High-Fiving and reciprocal Trunk-to-Mouth. After the initial explosive greeting, an exchange of lower intensity and less modulated Rumbles continues as the greeting proceeds.
