Arlington Forest Citizens Association

The Arlington Forest Citizens Association (AFCA) is a US nonprofit organization based in Arlington County, Virginia. It was established in 1940, shortly after the construction of homes in the Arlington Forest neighborhood began, with the aim of fostering community engagement and improving local conditions.

History

AFCA was formed by a group of residents who recognized the need for a collective voice to represent their interests in local governance. William C. Tucker served as the initial organizer and provisional president, while Mrs. Frank S. Bruffey acted as temporary secretary. The first permanent officers were elected in January 1941. Elton Layton, D.C. Scott Daniel, and Sylvester W. (Bob) Keesee played key roles in drafting the Association's constitution and by-laws.

Mission and Activities

AFCA focuses on enhancing the quality of life for residents through various initiatives. This includes organizing community events such as holiday parties, spring cleanups, community yard sales, and home and garden tours. AFCA also supports local schools by making donations to their PTAs and advocates for community improvements. In recent years, the Association has worked on projects such as traffic calming measures, invasive plant removal in Lubber Run Park, playground upgrades, and neighborhood sidewalk repairs. Additionally, AFCA played a crucial role in efforts to preserve local landmarks like the Lubber Run Amphitheater and Community Center.

Publications and Communication

AFCA issues a regular newsletter, The Arlington Forester, distributed to all households eight times annually. The Association also maintains an email listserv for timely updates and leverages its role in the community to communicate concerns to local authorities.

Governance

The organization is governed by a board of elected officers and has experienced fluctuations in membership over the years. Despite these challenges, AFCA remains active in addressing key community issues.

Community Impact

Arlington Forest residents value their neighborhood for its historic charm, natural beauty, and community spirit. AFCA's efforts contribute significantly to maintaining these qualities, ensuring that Arlington Forest remains an attractive and enjoyable place to live. The Association's work reflects broader civic engagement trends in Arlington County, where local communities are proactive in shaping their environments and advocating for residents' needs.
