Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, also known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a significant nonprofit organization governing Freemasonry in the state of Texas. It is one of the largest and most influential Masonic Grand Lodges in the world.
Background
The history of Freemasonry in Texas began early in the state's development. In 1828, Stephen F. Austin attempted to establish Masonic lodges in Texas by petitioning the York Grand Lodge of Mexico. However, this effort was thwarted by the Mexican government's ban on Freemasonry due to concerns about its liberal influences[1]. Despite these setbacks, Masonic activities continued in secret until the Texas Revolution.
Formation of the Grand Lodge
In 1835, six Masons gathered under an oak tree near Brazoria to form the first Masonic lodge in Texas. They obtained a dispensation from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana to establish Holland Lodge No. 36, now known as Holland Lodge No. 1[2]. By 1837, two more lodges—Milam Lodge No. 40 in Nacogdoches and McFarland Lodge No. 41 in San Augustine—were formed under the same Grand Lodge of Louisiana[2].
On April 16, 1838, these lodges met in Houston to establish the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas[1]. Anson Jones, a prominent figure in Texas history, served as the first Grand Master. Following Texas's admission to the United States as a state in 1845, the Grand Lodge adapted its name to the Grand Lodge of Texas[2].
Freemasonry and the Texas Revolution
Freemasons played a significant role in the Texas Revolution. Several notable figures, including James Bonham, James Bowie, David Crockett, and William Barrett Travis, were Freemasons and part of the defenders of the Alamo[1]. The presence of Masonic ties also influenced the treatment of some survivors, as seen in the protection offered to the widow and child of Almaron Dickenson by Mexican Colonel Juan Almonte, who recognized Masonic symbols[1].
Activities and Philanthropy
The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas focus on the development of their members and community service. The organization supports various charitable initiatives, including programs for children's education and health, such as the Fantastic Teeth and Take Time to Read initiatives. They also provide scholarships to deserving students[2].
Structure and Membership
Membership in the Grand Lodge of Texas is restricted to men who must petition a local lodge to join the fraternity. The process involves an interview and background investigation, followed by a vote from lodge members[3]. As of 2019, the Grand Lodge reported approximately 69,099 members[1].
History and Legacy
The Grand Lodge of Texas is the oldest continuously operating organization in Texas, with a legacy spanning over 180 years[5]. Despite a decline in membership since its peak after World War II, the fraternity remains strong and committed to its values and community contributions[2].
