Blacks In Government

Blacks In Government, Inc. (BIG) was established in 1975 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization under the District of Columbia jurisdiction in 1976. The organization was founded by a group of African American employees at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (now known as the Department of Health and Human Services) in Rockville, Maryland[1][2].

Purpose and Mission

BIG's purpose is to advocate for equal opportunity and professional development for African Americans in government. Its mission is to promote equity, excellence, and opportunity through advocacy, professional development, and empowerment of African Americans in the civil service at local, state, and federal levels[1][3].

History

Initially focused on addressing employment issues faced by African American civil servants at the federal level, BIG quickly expanded to become a national organization addressing similar issues at state, county, and municipal levels[2][3]. The organization has played a pivotal role in organizing African Americans in public service to confront mutual workplace and community issues[1][3].

Goals and Activities

BIG's goals include promoting equity in all aspects of American life, excellence in public service, and opportunities for all Americans[1][2]. The organization hosts various events and activities to support its members and the broader community, including scholarship awards and community outreach initiatives[2].

Status

BIG is designated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, making donations to it tax-deductible[4]. The organization is part of the public, society benefit category under the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities (NTEE)[4].

Chapters and Leadership

BIG has several chapters across the United States, each contributing to the organization's mission. Chapters like the EPA-William D. Barber, Jr. Chapter and the HHS/BIG Chapter are examples of BIG's presence within federal agencies[1][2]. The organization celebrates milestones such as its 50th anniversary in 2025, highlighting its role as a pillar of leadership and advocacy for Black professionals in government[5].

Message from Honorable David A. Groves National President Challenging Times This has been an incredibly tumultuous week and my heart and prayers are with those who were placed on Administrative Leave earlier this week. While the media has reached out requesting interviews I felt it was essential to address the members of Blacks In Government BIG first. Over the past several days I have consulted with our Legal Review and Communications Chairs and CoChairs.
