Overview

The Good Shepherd Mission Foundation (GSM) is a nonprofit organization established in 1979 in Puttur, India. It was founded by Henry Bhasker and his wife, Viola, who were motivated by Christian principles and a desire to assist those in need following a personal crisis. The organization primarily focuses on providing social, medical, and educational services to marginalized and impoverished communities in the region.

History

The inception of the Good Shepherd Mission was catalyzed by a personal tragedy when Henry Bhasker's wife was involved in a severe car accident. Following her recovery, the couple committed themselves to founding a mission in the name of Jesus Christ. This mission began humbly with the care of two orphans in their home and quickly expanded as they recognized the dire needs of the surrounding community.

In the early 1990s, the mission gained further credibility and support through a visit from Dr. Charlie Wolfe, a dentist from the Calvary United Methodist Church. His observations of the mission's work led to the construction of the first dedicated facility, the Good Shepherd Eye Hospital, completed in 1992. This hospital provided free eye surgeries and served over 6,000 patients from 1993 to 2010.

Programs and Services

The Good Shepherd Mission Foundation operates multiple programs aimed at addressing various community needs, including:

  • Establishing 12 village churches, each supported by its own evangelist, to serve areas that previously lacked a Christian presence.
  • Running an orphanage that provides shelter for approximately 150 children.
  • Offering educational and health services through an outreach program in the village of Kolladam, which includes a teacher, health clinic, orphanage, and church.
  • Operating a home for about 20 elderly individuals, ensuring their care and support.
  • Providing daily feeding and clothing programs for the less fortunate.
  • Conducting regular worship services and special activities, such as Christmas dinners for children, elderly residents, and staff members.
  • Facilitating access to higher education for qualifying orphans.
  • Maintaining a hospital dedicated to offering free healthcare services, including general, gynecological, dental, and physiotherapy care, with a capacity of 20 beds, established in 2006.
  • Managing an HIV/AIDS and TB center that provides shelter, food, and medical care for individuals affected by these diseases.

Funding and Support

The foundation relies on donations and fundraising efforts to sustain its operations. It promotes transparency by committing that 100% of all funds raised are utilized directly for its various programs and services, reflecting its mission to advocate for those in need.

The Good Shepherd Mission Foundation continues to expand its reach and impact in Puttur and surrounding areas, driven by a commitment to faith, community service, and humanitarian support.
