Description

Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition

The Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition (UPEC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the environment in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Founded in 1976, UPEC is the oldest grassroots environmental organization in the region.

Mission and Objectives

UPEC's mission is to protect and maintain the unique environmental qualities of the Upper Peninsula by educating the public and serving as a watchdog to industry and government. The coalition aims to preserve the natural beauty and resources of the area, which include old-growth timber, scenic rivers, lakes, and wilderness areas like Isle Royale, Pictured Rocks, and the Porcupine Mountains.

Activities and Achievements

Over the years, UPEC has been actively involved in shaping environmental policy and managing resources in the Upper Peninsula. Some of their notable achievements include limiting motorboat use in the Sylvania Wilderness, contributing to the management of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, and participating in the Nuclear Waste Referendum. UPEC also works to protect special places such as Sturgeon Gorge, Boney Falls, and the Bond and Au Train Reservoirs.

UPEC supports environmental education through events and grants. Each March, they host "Celebrate the U.P.!", an event that gathers artists, tribal elders, and botanists to promote environmental awareness. The organization also sponsors mini-grants for schools and groups to enhance environmental education programs.

Structure and Governance

UPEC is a 501(c)(3) organization with approximately 200-300 members and a governing board consisting of 11 members from across the Upper Peninsula. The organization relies on volunteer efforts and operates without paid staff positions, emphasizing community involvement and support.

Financial Overview

UPEC offers grants to support conservation and education initiatives. For example, they have provided grants to the Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy. The organization generates revenue primarily through grants, contributions, and investment income.

Recognition and Ratings

UPEC has received a 2/4 Star rating from Charity Navigator, reflecting its role as an educational organization dedicated to environmental protection in the Upper Peninsula.
