Spring Ford Country Club

Overview

The Spring Ford Country Club is a 501(c)(7) social and recreational club located in Pennsylvania. It is classified as a nonprofit organization, although donations to this organization are not tax-deductible[1][3].

History

The Spring Ford Country Club was established in 1924, following an initiative by Lloyd Early Johnson, the owner and editor of the local newspaper, the Weekly Advertiser. Johnson published an anonymous letter advocating for a community golf club as a social hub, which resonated with the community's desire for expanded social networks[2].

The club was founded on a 114-acre tract of the Gottshall farm, which included a creek running through hilly terrain. Renowned golf course architect J. Franklin Meehan designed the initial nine-hole course, with the first game teeing off on May 8, 1925. The club expanded to a full 18-hole course under the design of William Gordon in 1958[2].

In the 1990s, Gil Hanse evaluated the course, leading to further improvements. By 2020, the course required renovation, which was undertaken by architect Tyler Rae. Renovations began in the fall of 2021 and extended into the 2022 season[2].

Operations and Finance

As of the fiscal year ending March 2023, Spring Ford Country Club reported total revenues of approximately $3.42 million. The primary sources of revenue included grants and contributions, program services, and sales of inventory[3].

The club employs a significant number of people, with 152 employees listed. Key personnel include Ira Berkowitz as General Manager, and Joseph Sterchak as President[3].

Community and Amenities

Spring Ford Country Club serves as a social hub and offers extensive golf facilities, a classic clubhouse, and various amenities for members and their families. It is recognized as one of the region's strongest golf courses, situated in the countryside of Western Montgomery County[4].

Classification and Legal Status

As a 501(c)(7) organization, Spring Ford Country Club is classified under social and recreational clubs. Unlike other tax-exempt organizations, contributions to 501(c)(7) clubs are generally not deductible as charitable contributions[1][3].
