A truly moving evening with guest conductor Sir Donald Runnicles and violinist Maria Ioudenitch, violinist in last night's STRAUSS ALPINE SYMPHONY concert! Runnicles and the CSO opened the program with a splendid depiction of a sprawling Scottish landscape in "The Land of the Mountain and the Flood" by Runnicles' fellow countryman Hamish MacCunn. Next, Ioudenitch wowed concertgoers with her poise and elegance in Mendelssohn’s soaring violin concerto. Strauss' "An Alpine Symphony"—which the CSO gave the U.S. Premiere of in April 1916—completed the concert. It depicts an epic trek to the summit of an Alpine mountain, from dawn to sunset, through storms, uncertainty, and glory. Photos from last night's MAC Film Series showing of VOICE OF FREEDOM, the compelling documentary on the remarkable life of Marian Anderson and her performance at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 after being barred from Constitution Hall due to her race. Along with the film screening, attendees enjoyed performances of works that were touched by Anderson's life by Dr. Louise Toppin, Professor of Music and University Diversity & Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, followed by a Q&A session moderated by MAC Chair Dr. Kori Hill.
