Join us this Saturday 7:30 PM at Taube Atrium Theatre to experience the premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s “Jubilees” on our Northern Lights program. A leading Finnish composer, Magnus Lindberg is renowned for his complex and energetic orchestral music. “Jubilee” is an orchestration of "Piano Jubilees," commissioned by the Royal Festival Hall for Pierre Boulez's birthday in 2000. In the composer’s words: “The Jubilees suite bears a distant relationship to Debussy’s and Chopin’s studies since they operate on clearly defined textures. The first movement contains the most events. The following movements undergo a process of purification so that in the last the harmony rises to the surface stripped of all else: the overall dramaturgy has been clarified.” Tickets and student discounts available at https://sfcmp.org/concerts/2024-2025-season/northern-lights/ (fb)

Kaija Saariaho (1952–2023) was a leading voice of her generation in Finland and beyond, renowned for her luxuriant, mysterious textures blending live performance and electronics. Her studies at IRCAM, Paris’s Center for electroacoustic experimentation, profoundly shaped her sound. Experience “Lichtbogen” (1985)—one of her seminal works with live electronics—performed live alongside a breathtaking video of the Aurora Borealis, the magnificent stellar lights that inspired this composition.
