Little League Baseball Inc.
Little League Baseball Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing youth sports programs, primarily focused on baseball and softball. It emphasizes developing discipline, teamwork, courage, loyalty, good character, and strong physical health among its participants.
History
Founded in 1938 by Carl Stotz in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, Little League Baseball was initially designed to organize baseball games for pre-teens. The first games were played on fields two-thirds the size of standard baseball diamonds. By 1939, the first official Little League season commenced with three teams and 30 players. The program gained momentum over the years, expanding beyond Pennsylvania in 1947 with its first league in New Jersey. This expansion coincided with the establishment of the National Little League Tournament, later renamed the Little League World Series.
The organization experienced significant growth, both in the United States and internationally. By 1951, the first permanent Little League was established outside the United States, in British Columbia, Canada. By the late 1990s, Little League had spread to over 100 countries.
Structure and Divisions
Little League is structured into four main levels: local leagues, districts, regions, and international. Each local league operates independently within its community, with its own constitution, board of directors, and volunteered staff. The district level consists of several local leagues, which participate in district tournaments. Regions oversee these districts and assist in organizing larger tournaments.
Little League offers various divisions to accommodate children of different ages and skill levels:
- Tee Ball: For children aged 4-7.
- Minor League: For children aged 7-12.
- Little League (Major League): For children aged 9-12.
- Junior League: For children aged 13-14.
- Senior League: For children aged 14-16.
- Big League: For children aged 16-18. It also includes softball programs for both boys and girls across similar age ranges.
Mission and Philosophy
The mission of Little League focuses on developing the character of children rather than solely on athletic prowess. It emphasizes providing opportunities for all eligible participants to play in every game, regardless of their ability or financial means. The organization's philosophy ensures no child is turned away, promoting inclusivity and community engagement.
Little League has been recognized for its contributions to youth sports and was granted a Federal Charter by the U.S. Congress in 1964. Today, it operates with millions of participants and thousands of leagues worldwide.
