We are our History Rocky River a Centennial City 19032003 Welcome to The Rocky River Historical Society Where our present becomes the past that shapes our future. The story of our town begins in 1805 when Gideon Granger a Connecticut landowner first explored the area at the mouth of Rocky River. He envisioned a great city there that would overtake Cleveland and become a major port on the Great Lakes. While Grangers dream never came true settlers started arriving and in 1819 the area was formally named Rockport Township.
