French American Museum Exchange Inc

Overview

The French American Museum Exchange Inc, commonly known as FRAME, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering cultural exchange between museums in France and North America. It was founded in 1999 by Elizabeth Rohatyn and Françoise Cachin, with the mission of promoting cultural dialogue and partnerships between member institutions across the Atlantic.

History

FRAME was established during a period of heightened diplomatic and cultural exchange between France and the United States, influenced by the work of Felix Rohatyn, the U.S. Ambassador to France from 1997 to 2000. Initially, the organization included 18 member museums and has since expanded to a consortium of 32 major museums in France, the United States, and Canada.

Mission and Activities

The organization's primary goal is to facilitate mutual understanding and appreciation between French and American cultures through museum collaborations. This is achieved through joint exhibition projects, professional exchanges among museum staff, public education programs, and scholarly dialogues. FRAME hosts annual conferences and other in-person events to bring together representatives from both sides of the Atlantic for collaborative discussions and planning.

Leadership and Organization

FRAME operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, supported by contributions from individuals, foundations, corporations, and public subsidies, as well as funding from its member museums. It is led by co-presidents representing both France and North America, currently William Beekman for North America and Christelle Creff for France. The organization also has executive directors for each region: Marguerite d’Aprile Quigley for North America and Émilie Vanhaesebroucke for France.

Financial Overview

FRAME's revenue primarily comes from contributions, which account for a significant portion of its total income. The organization's financial operations are managed to support ongoing cultural exchange initiatives and collaboration projects with member museums. As of recent financial reports, FRAME's expenses are focused on supporting its programs and maintaining its operations.

Impact

By fostering collaboration between museums across cultural and geographical boundaries, FRAME has become a unique catalyst for cultural diplomacy between France and North America. Its initiatives have enhanced public awareness and appreciation of French and American art, facilitating the exchange of masterpieces and cultural resources that enrich both nations' cultural landscapes.
