Overview
Questers Inc, also known as The Questers, is a U.S. nonprofit organization founded in 1944 by Jessie Elizabeth Bardens in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania. The organization is dedicated to educating members and the public about historical objects, places, and events. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, allowing donations to be tax-deductible.
History
The Questers was established with the first meeting held on April 6, 1944, where participants were asked to bring a sandwich and an antique for discussion. By 1950, Bardens had organized six chapters into a national organization, which was incorporated under the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a nonprofit corporation in 1953. Jessie Elizabeth Bardens passed away in 1963. In 1991, The Questers expanded to become an international organization with chapters in the United States and Canada.
Mission
The Questers' mission focuses on the preservation and restoration of historical artifacts, memorials, buildings, and landmarks. They also emphasize education about these items, promoting historical awareness and understanding. Members engage in lifelong learning, appreciating historical sites, museums, and artifacts.
Activities
Members meet regularly through local chapters, typically from September to May. State and provincial chapters organize larger meetings, and there is an annual international convention where members learn about local preservation projects and historical sites. The Questers also provide grants for preservation and restoration projects, including a two-year scholarship to a student at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and a three-year fellowship to a student in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation.
Structure
The organization is structured into local chapters, state/provincial chapters, and the overarching international organization. Officers and international board members serve two-year terms. Active members contribute financially through international dues, which support The Quester Quarterly newsletter and operational funds.
Membership
A Quester is described as a curious, enthusiastic, and imaginative individual who enjoys studying antiques and historical items. Membership is open to anyone regardless of gender, race, or creed, fostering a community of like-minded individuals who share a passion for history and preservation. Members participate in educational programs, field trips, and social activities, building lasting friendships.
