Description

Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America, Inc.

The Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America, Inc., commonly referred to as Jewish War Veterans (JWV), is a nonprofit organization established in 1896. It was founded by a group of 63 Jewish Civil War veterans to counter widespread antisemitic claims that Jews had not participated in the war. As the oldest active national veterans' service organization in the U.S., JWV aims to recognize and honor the contributions of Jewish service members.

History

Initially formed as the Hebrew Union Veterans, the organization later changed its name to Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America. JWV has a long history of advocating for veterans' rights and combating antisemitism. During the 1930s, JWV supported international anti-Nazi boycotts, demonstrating its proactive stance against injustice. The organization also played a significant role in promoting patriotism through various community programs, including support for the establishment of Israel.

Mission and Activities

  • Veteran Support: JWV focuses on assisting veterans navigate the complex benefits process through their National Service Officers (NSO) program. They provide support to veterans of all faiths.
  • Community Programs: JWV engages in numerous community activities, including disaster relief efforts, hosting events for hospitalized veterans, and participating in Boy and Girl Scout programs.
  • Advocacy: The organization annually releases resolutions outlining its legislative and advocacy priorities. JWV members participate in "Capitol Hill Action Day" to discuss veterans' issues and antisemitism with lawmakers.
  • Education and Grants: The Jewish War Veterans Foundation offers grants to help veterans and their descendants pursue higher education.

Membership and Structure

JWV has approximately 7,000 members across various categories, including active, associate, patron, honorary, in-service, posthumous, life, and distinguished life memberships. The organization is structured around multiple posts nationwide, with a strong presence in veteran advocacy coalitions.

Legacy

JWV manages the National Museum of American Jewish Military History, the only Congressionally accredited veterans' museum in the U.S. This museum serves as a testament to Jewish contributions in the military and highlights the organization's commitment to preserving history.
