Our education bookings roll on—rain or shine! Yesterday, Fountaindale Elementary’s 4th graders proved they could handle a fountain of rain and still bring boundless enthusiasm for 18th-century life, games, and trades. As a fully outdoor, open-air museum, we were impressed—but not surprised—to see students arrive ready for anything: rain macs, ponchos, water boots, umbrellas, and big grins for a very wet adventure. Our staff had a fantastic time with them, and even Hazel and Hawthorn came out to say hello (though, to be fair, the goat kind of kids aren’t fans of the rain!). A huge thank you to all the teachers and parents at Fountaindale for organizing such a curious and cheerful group of learners. We even learned something ourselves! While discussing 18th-century transportation (walking, riding, wagons, boats, and ships), several students asked about bicycles. We mentioned they didn’t exist yet—but then double-checked! Turns out, the earliest version of the modern bicycle, the German draisine, was invented in 1817. Which is probably just as well… Paul Revere’s midnight ride would’ve lost a bit of flair if it had ended with "the regulars are coming, the regulars are coming" a handlebar bell and a “ding ding!” (fb)

At the beginning of May, we welcomed 218 third graders from Greencastle-Antrim Elementary School to learn about our frontier homestead. This weekend, we were delighted to find a large package on the porch filled with adorable and heartfelt thank-you letters! It was lovely to read about what they enjoyed most: dressing up in “so many layers,” looking down the well, exploring the garden and nature trails, and learning about different 18th century trades. Many students mentioned how much they enjoyed the cooper and the potter—great job, Sam Cathey! Of course, petting the goats and playing cricket were also big hits. We couldn't help but notice how many students drew Bluey! When explaining the rules of cricket to third graders, it’s hard not to reference the popular kids’ TV show—and Matthew’s impressively accurate Bluey/Australian accent certainly helped bring it to life! His 'hilarious accent', and drawings of Matthew being laughed at by kids was very true to life! One theme was consistent throughout all the letters: how welcoming and fun the programs were. By making history relatable and fun—especially through humor—kids form a positive connection, and many said they can’t wait to visit again! (fb)
