Extending the benefits of improved seed to the furthest reaches of Africa Recent advances in the development and supply of seed of improved crop varieties in some countries of Africa have helped to reverse decades of declining crop yields and provided new hope that the continent can feed itself and help feed the rest of the world. However, these advances have so far been limited to a select group of countries where access to seed has been made a priority by governments, donor agencies, and development groups. Meanwhile, farmers in many African countries remain beyond the reach of the supply of improved seed, and continue to harvest far less than they could if better seed were available. The mission of Seed Systems Group is to extend the recent advances in seed systems development to farmers in countries of Africa that have so far been left behind.

Our Work In 15 target countries Approximately 38 million farmers live in 15 African countries where there is virtually no access to seed of improved crop varieties including Angola Benin Burundi Cameroon Chad Cote dIvoire the Democratic Republic of Congo Eritrea Guinea Madagascar Republic of Congo Senegal Sierra Leone and Togo. Seed Systems Group works to establish regular dependable supply of highyielding resilient seed of a wide range of food crops among poor smallholder farmers to help them improve their crop yields nutritional status and income. The Seed Systems Group is a nonprofit organization registered in the United States and headquartered in Nairobi Kenya.

Seed Systems Group is currently supporting the establishment of a sustainable supply of high-yielding, climate-resilient seeds of improved crop varieties in four countries in the Horn of Africa—Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, and South Sudan. This initiative is funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). On the 15th and 17th of July 2025, SSG, in collaboration with FIPS Africa, conducted two similar but separate trainings for Village-Based Advisor (the selected lead farmers) in Aru Boma and Yei, South Sudan.
