Free and Accepted Masons of New York Grand Lodge
The Free and Accepted Masons of New York Grand Lodge, also known as the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York, is one of the largest and most prominent Masonic organizations in the United States. It was officially organized on December 15, 1782, under a Provincial Grand Warrant dated September 5, 1781, from the Antient Grand Lodge of England.
History
Freemasonry in New York dates back to the mid-1730s, when Daniel Coxe Jr. was appointed Provincial Grand Master for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Although there are no authenticated records of his activities, this marks the first documented presence of Freemasonry in the region. Over the years, various Provincial Grand Masters were appointed, with the last being Sir John Johnson, who fled to Canada during the American Revolution, effectively leaving the Moderns lodges without leadership.
Prior to the establishment of the Grand Lodge of New York, both the Moderns and Ancients Grand Lodges of England issued warrants for lodges in New York. However, it was the Ancients who provided the foundation for the independent Grand Lodge of New York. In 1784, Robert R. Livingston was installed as Grand Master, marking a significant milestone in the organization's history. Livingston notably administered the oath of office to President George Washington during his inauguration.
Development and Structure
The Grand Lodge declared its independence on June 6, 1787, assuming the title Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York. Today, it comprises over 34,000 Freemasons in more than 466 lodges across New York State and beyond, including twelve additional lodges in the Middle East under the District Grand Lodge of Syria-Lebanon.
Philanthropic and Cultural Impact
Masons in New York have contributed significantly to the welfare of both Masonic and non-Masonic communities through their service in various professions and philanthropic endeavors. The organization supports numerous charitable activities and educational programs, benefiting both members and the broader society.
Buildings and Locations
Historically, the Grand Lodge has had several notable buildings in New York City. Early meetings were held in various locations, including taverns and Tammany Hall. The first Masonic Hall was constructed on Broadway in 1826 and later replaced by a new building in 1875. The current Grand Lodge building, located at 23rd Street and 6th Avenue, was built in 1909, although its construction was initially controversial.
Relationship with Other Organizations
The Grand Lodge of New York has established mutual recognition with other Masonic bodies, including the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York since 2001. This recognition reflects a broader trend towards unity and cooperation among different Masonic traditions.
Youth Programs and Community Involvement
New York is also home to various Masonic youth organizations, such as the Organization of Triangles, Inc., founded in 1925. These groups aim to foster leadership, community service, and fraternal values among younger generations.
The Grand Lodge continues to play a vital role in promoting Freemasonry's principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth throughout New York State and beyond.
