Free & Accepted Masons of New York

The Free & Accepted Masons of New York, commonly known as the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York, is the largest and oldest Masonic organization in the U.S. state of New York. Organized on December 15, 1782, it serves as the governing body for numerous Masonic functions throughout the state.

History

Freemasonry first appeared in New York in the mid-1730s, with Daniel Coxe Jr. appointed as Provincial Grand Master for New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. However, no records confirm his active role. Over time, additional warrants were issued by the Premier Grand Lodge of England, culminating in the creation of the Grand Lodge of New York under a Provincial Grand Warrant from the Antient Grand Lodge of England.

The Grand Lodge declared its independence on June 6, 1787, and assumed the title "Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the State of New York." Notable figures such as Robert R. Livingston have played significant roles in its leadership. Livingston was instrumental in merging the rival "Modern" and "Ancient" Masonic traditions in New York before their official unification in England in 1813.

Activities and Jurisdiction

The Grand Lodge of New York oversees approximately 24,000 Freemasons across more than 800 lodges in New York State, with additional lodges in Lebanon. It operates various charitable initiatives, including the management of the Masonic Home in Utica and support for the Livingston Masonic Library.

Philanthropic Efforts

Throughout its history, the organization has been involved in numerous philanthropic activities, contributing to the welfare of Masons and the broader community. This includes supporting educational programs and providing aid during times of crisis.

Relationship with Other Organizations

The Grand Lodge of New York has mutual recognition with the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of New York since 2001, fostering greater unity and cooperation among Masonic bodies in the state.

Governance and Leadership

The current Grand Master is Steven Adam Rubin. Past notable Grand Masters have included Robert R. Livingston, who served for sixteen years and presided over significant events, including the inauguration of George Washington.
