Teens today face a daunting gauntlet of challenges stemming from their own physical and psychological development and from the environment around them (i.e., media, family, school, peers, etc.). Teens need - and want - the adults around them to provide love, intimacy, a sense of value, and safety. But, for the "average" teen such caring adults are too infrequently available or do not exist at all. The results are poor decisions and messed up lives as teens look elsewhere to get these needs met. The ultimate end is too often depression, despair, total lose of hope, and suicide. The C.H.A.T. for Teens organization was created to inspire resilient hope in teens by offering guidance, encouragement, and compassion using new technologies like instant messaging and email to truly connect with them on a heart-to-heart level. The organization will create and manage public programs that create and facilitate adult-to-teen coaching and mentoring relationships carried out using instant messaging and email communication through the Internet. Using the Internet in this way allows the programs to reach a broad population of teens in an environment where they feel free to be open and honest. The intent of these relationships is to provide compassionate caregiving to help teens deal with issues they face in the environment around them: dysfunctional homes, school issues, peer issues, identity issues, and all the other challenges of adolescence. The ultimate goal is to provide the adult support that teens yearn for.
