For World MS Day, we’re spotlighting the groundbreaking work of Dr. Paul Lieberman and his team at The Wistar Institute. The Lieberman Lab investigates how Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV)—a common childhood virus that often causes only mild symptoms—can remain dormant in the body and later contribute to serious diseases like cancer and multiple sclerosis (MS). Their research has uncovered new ways EBV may trigger MS and how those mechanisms could be targeted with future treatments. By understanding how EBV drives disease, the Lieberman Lab aims to stop it before it causes harm. “We are in the chase for a cure,” says Dr. Lieberman. “This opportunity to target EBV across a number of different diseases is what keeps me wanting to get back to work, day after day.
