Over the past nine months, Su Casa Hispanic Center—a program of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio—partnered with students from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine on an initiative titled Bridging Gaps: Digital Maternal Health Education for Latina Mothers in Cincinnati. Su Casa Hispanic Center plays a vital role in connecting the Hispanic/Latino community in Greater Cincinnati with essential resources that support health and well-being. Our Health Promotion team specifically addresses healthcare access by organizing bi-annual health fairs, offering monthly educational classes on a range of topics, and helping coordinate financial support for medical services. However, many Hispanic/Latino immigrants face significant barriers to care, including lack of insurance, language differences, and limited health and digital literacy. This collaboration aimed to provide trustworthy maternal health resources while strengthening social support among the mothers Su Casa serves. To ensure the project’s sustainability and adaptability, UC medical students developed a mobile-friendly website offering foundational health education and connecting users with reputable local providers of healthcare services and supplies. Recognizing that many in the Hispanic/Latino community rely on smartphones for internet access and often face digital literacy challenges, the site was intentionally designed with a user-friendly interface and multiple formats, including text, images, and videos. The website was introduced at a community baby shower hosted by Su Casa, where students emphasized the importance of social connection in accessing resources and supporting postpartum mental health. This project also served as a learning experience for the students, allowing them to explore effective strategies for delivering health education to underserved, Spanish-speaking populations. Catholic Charities and Su Casa extend their heartfelt thanks to the UC College of Medicine for this meaningful partnership. (fb)
