When 13-year-old Logan Lillard had surgery to remove a brain tumor, his family expected a tough recovery. But they never imagined he would wake up unable to speak, move, or even eat on his own, all the result of an unexpected complication known as cerebellar mutism syndrome. During his first days at MRC, he needed assistance with even the most basic tasks. “When he first got here, he needed two people just to help him get to and from the bathroom or shower,” said his occupational therapist, Mollie Harkey. “We worked a lot on his coordination, and now, for the most part, he’s able to complete his self-care tasks on his own.” His physical therapist, Anna Sumrall said, “I put him on the Zero G machine a lot with the treadmill to work on balance. At first, he was fatigued within a minute and a half. By the end, he was a lot faster and could go for four minutes at a time.” They also incorporated a metronome beat to improve his sequencing and reaction time, helping him regain control over his movements. Now, after weeks of intensive therapy, he is home, walking with assistance, and proving every day just how strong he is. #CarryTheTorch (fb)
