Today is National Learn to Compost Day, an opportunity to highlight the critical role composting plays in sustainable waste management and soil health. Composting diverts organic waste from landfills, reduces methane emissions, and creates nutrient-rich soil that supports healthy plant growth. For those new to composting, some key best practices include: - Balance your greens and browns: Mix items like fruit and vegetable scraps with materials such as leaves and cardboard. - Avoid contaminants: Keep meat, dairy, and synthetic materials out of your compost pile to prevent odors and pests. - Maintain moisture: Your compost should feel like a damp sponge (not too wet or too dry.) - Aerate regularly: Turn your compost pile to provide oxygen, which accelerates decomposition. For residents of the suburban Philadelphia region, we’re fortunate to have access to expert composting services through local organizations like Back to Earth Compost Crew - Suburban Philadelphia. Their convenient weekly curbside compost pickup helps households reduce waste with minimal effort. Learn more about composting and explore services near you at backtoearthcompost.com. (fb)

How do you inspire 300+ sixth graders to care about their environment? Start in their backyard! 🌍 At this year’s Teaching Green Symposium, environmental educator Eryn Jackson and Yvonne Eglington of Methacton School District will share how their partnership is bringing environmental literacy to life. Through a program that blends classroom learning with real-world field experiences in the Wissahickon Watershed, Skyview Elementary 6th graders are diving into local environmental issues, and leading the charge on action projects to address them.
