Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall
Overview
The Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall (ACFL&MH), commonly known as the "Carnegie Carnegie", is a public library and music hall located in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. The institution was established as a philanthropic gift from Andrew Carnegie, a renowned Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist.
History
The construction of the ACFL&MH was inspired by the town's decision to merge neighboring boroughs of Chartiers and Mansfield into a single entity named in honor of Andrew Carnegie in 1894. Moved by this gesture, Carnegie offered to build a library in the center of the new town. On April 26, 1898, he gifted the town with an initial grant of $200,000, which eventually increased to $244,000 by the completion of the project. This grant covered the construction of a public library, a music hall, a lecture hall, and a gymnasium, as well as purchasing the initial collection of books and establishing an endowment fund for the library[1][3].
Construction began in October 1899 and was completed in less than two years, with the formal opening occurring on May 1, 1901[3]. The first book circulated was "Triumphant Democracy" by Andrew Carnegie himself. The music hall hosted its first concert on May 10, 1901[3].
Architecture
The building was designed by Struthers and Hannah in 1899. It features a two-story Italianate facade with a rusticated stone base, capped with a continuous bracketed cornice and hip roof. The facade is made of russet-colored brick with terracotta trim. The Music Hall is distinguished by a projecting central entrance bay topped with a smaller pediment. The design includes elegant arch-topped windows and paired Corinthian columns, reflecting Palladian antecedents[4][5].
Significance and Legacy
The ACFL&MH is recognized as a historic landmark, listed on the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks and the National Register of Historic Places since 1981[1]. It is one of the few libraries endowed by Andrew Carnegie, which exempted it from requiring community funding under the typical "Carnegie Formula"[3].
In the 2000s, the community undertook significant restoration efforts to address financial and structural challenges. By 2022, the facility had undergone extensive renovations to ensure its viability and appeal as a cultural hub for the region[5].
Programs and Facilities
Today, the ACFL&MH includes a public library, a music hall with over 500 seats, a lecture hall, studio space, and a preserved Grand Army of the Republic post. The facility hosts cultural events, concerts, and educational programs, serving as a vital community asset[5].
Restoration Efforts
The building has faced financial difficulties over the years, but a major restoration campaign initiated in the early 2000s has revitalized its condition. Community efforts secured necessary funding through grassroots donations, allowing for structural repairs, weatherproofing, and accessibility enhancements. Recent upgrades include renovated spaces for art exhibitions, symposiums, and intimate performances[5].
Recent Developments
The creation of Library Park in 2022 transformed the steep grounds into inviting green space, connecting the library and music hall to Carnegie's Main Street. This initiative positions the ACFL&MH as a vibrant cultural center, attractive to both locals and visitors[5].

About the organization

At the Andrew Carnegie Free Library Music Hall we work to build community with a library theater and historic site that welcome inform entertain and engage the community and the region in lifelong learning. The Carnegie Carnegie has been the best part of raising a family here. My girls walk to the Library to enjoy a treat in the park hopscotch on the sidewalk then run in to play and check out books. Last weekend they experienced their first opera in the Studio and what a privilege it was.
