Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department
The Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department (EIN: 251526942) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fire and rescue services to the Alum Bank area and surrounding communities in rural Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Established in 1949, the department was formed in response to a significant fire that destroyed a local church, marking the community's need for its own firefighting capabilities.
History
The origins of the Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department trace back to a devastating fire that highlighted the absence of immediate firefighting resources in the area. Prior to its establishment, the nearest fire department was the Bedford Fire Department, which provided some assistance but was unable to meet the growing demands of the community. To address this need, a group of local residents came together to form the fire company.
In its early years, the department operated from a stone structure located in Pleasantville, which served both as a fire station and a borough building. As the community's firefighting needs expanded, so did the department. In the early 1990s, the Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department relocated to a newly constructed station along Route 96, just outside of Pleasantville Borough. This facility has been continuously developed and improved by the dedicated efforts of its members and local volunteers.
Over the years, the department has expanded its facilities by acquiring additional land, which has allowed for the construction of more apparatus bays and support facilities. This growth reflects the organization’s commitment to providing effective emergency services while also serving as a community hub.
Operations
The Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department operates as an all-volunteer force, relying on the commitment and training of its members to provide emergency services. Currently, the department is staffed by approximately 32 active volunteers who undergo rigorous training to ensure preparedness for various emergency situations, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and community safety initiatives.
The department plays an integral role in the community by not only responding to emergencies but also engaging in educational outreach and safety programs to promote fire safety awareness among residents.
Community Engagement
Throughout the years, the Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department has maintained a strong relationship with the local community. The department hosts numerous fundraising events to support its operations and improve its facilities. Additionally, the township’s fields, acquired through various land purchases, are utilized for community sports, such as AYSO soccer, further strengthening the ties between the fire department and the residents of Alum Bank.
In summary, the Alum Bank Community Volunteer Fire Department stands as a vital part of the Alum Bank community, providing essential emergency services while fostering a spirit of volunteerism and community involvement. Its long history and ongoing commitment to public safety underscore its importance in the region.
